Meet Maddie, who was nicknamed Miss Manners at the shelter! On October 9th, Animal Control brought her to the Darlington County Humane Society shelter in South Carolina. Estimated to be one to two years old, Maddie is a Bully Breed blend. However, because she only weighs about 40 pounds, she has been described as a “Pocket Pit,” which sounds as cute as she is! But Maddie had something that wasn’t so cute: heartworms. This greatly limited her adoption or rescue possibilities.
After waiting in limbo for over three months, One Life to Live Rescue and Adoption in Pennsylvania expressed interest in taking Maddie on January 13th. The only obstacle to her rescue commitment was the cost of her heartworm treatment. Susan Blakeney, RADAR’s liaison with the Darlington County Humane Society Rescue, immediately sought our assistance. We agreed and Maddie received her heartworm treatment on January 23rd.
We were told this about Maddie from her time at the shelter: “She has a calm and respectful approach to other dogs. In fact, she was used to test dogs to see how they do with other dogs because she was so consistently good with other dogs. When she was not hanging out with other dogs, she loved to relax in laps to be close to humans. She’s not pushy or clinging in her affection towards humans, but rather very mellow and softly accepting of any attention she can garner.” Click here to view more photos of Maddie.
RADAR paid all of Maddie’s heartworm treatment costs, which totaled $267.
