Homer and Marge Simpson provide their little Maggie with a home and family, but this Maggie lost both her human home and her canine family, and then almost lost her life. This three-year-old Labrador Retriever mix arrived at the Mercer County Animal Shelter in West Virginia on July 9th. Maggie (known as Blackie at the shelter) and her litter of pups were surrendered to the shelter by her owners. As happens all too often, the pups were quickly adopted and rescued, but mom Maggie was left behind. And that did not bode well for a black dog at this shelter, where a dog can be euthanized at any time after ten days at the shelter.
On July 15th, Sherry Hutchison, RADAR’s liaison with the shelter, asked for our help for Maggie. We immediately provided an offer to assist with her vetting costs as an incentive for a rescue to take Maggie. In early August we received word that Maggie had a rescue taking her. However, there had been some confusion at the shelter, and Maggie was mistakenly identified as rescued. This turned out to be a good thing, as this got the attention of Three Rivers Labrador Retriever Rescue in Pennsylvania. On August 16th they agreed to take Maggie! She had her initial vetting done on August 17th.
We were told this about Maggie: “She is very shy and timid. She will need a quiet home with no small children. She is so gentle and just wants to be loved! She does not chew things in the house, she is housebroken, and she does not need to be crated. You can go to work and come home to see a wagging tail waiting for you with no issues!” To view more photos of Maggie, click here.
RADAR paid $150 towards Maggie’s initial vetting costs.
UPDATE! All funds for Maggie have been raised! Thank you!
UPDATE Maggie has crossed the Rainbow Bridge. She had slipped her collar on October 2nd. Her rescue searched for a month (with numerous sightings). Unfortunately, she hit by a car and found earlier today, November 4th.
