Mama Bea

Andy Griffith had his Aunt Bee to help raise his son Opie. But this Bea had her own son Opie to raise, so she became known as Mama Bea! At least seven years old, Bea is a Beagle mix who was surrendered by her family to the Chesterfield County Animal Services shelter in South Carolina on July 7th. Mama Bea arrived at the shelter with the rest of her canine clan, which included her five-week-old pup Opie, and her pregnant daughter! Both mother and daughter were also heartworm positive. It would take a Mayberry miracle to save this family.

Shannon Talanca, with Paws Crossroads Animal Rescue in Pennsylvania, requested RADAR’s help with Mama Bea’s heartworm treatment so that the rescue could take the entire family. We agreed, and Mama Bea and her family were safely out of the shelter on July 24th. But giving birth and nursing a pup at Mama Bea’s age, combined with her heartworm status and a severe case of hookworms, took its toll on her health. She developed pneumonia. From August 4th to 9th, Mama Bea had critical care hospitalization. Instead of heartworm treatment, RADAR helped to pay for Mama Bea’s emergency hospitalization. For a few tense days, it wasn’t clear that Mama Bea would survive. Fortunately, she did, and as this picture shows, Opie was thrilled to see her again!

“Mama Bea is laid back and quiet,” her temporary foster mom told us. “She gets along well with all of my dogs, and hasn’t even noticed my cats! She is a happy girl who loves people. She is a beautiful sweet girl!” To view more photos of Mama Bea (and Opie), click here.

RADAR paid $250 towards Mama Bea’s critical care costs.

UPDATE Mama Bea is not doing well. Her heartworm is much more severe than first thought. Mama Bea will now live out her life in her current foster home.
