Even Goldilocks might agree that this Mama Bear is just right! Because this three-year-old, mostly Lab mix was inclined to wander from her yard, her owner turned her in to the Darlington County Humane Society shelter in South Carolina on February 21st. Mama Bear’s wandering turned to wondering if she would get out of the shelter alive. Testing heartworm positive and with no rescue or adopter interest, she was placed on the dreaded Put To Sleep list for April 17th.
The volunteers with the Darlington County Humane Society urgently searched for a rescue to take her. With time rapidly running out, One Life to Live Rescue in Pennsylvania conditionally offered to take Mama Bear. While they had a foster for her, they did not have the funds necessary to cover her heartworm treatment costs. If those costs could be covered, Mama Bear would be safe. Susan Blakeney, RADAR’s liaison with the Darlington County Humane Society volunteers, sought our assistance. We committed to cover the cost of Mama Bear’s heartworm treatment, which took place on April 23rd.
A Darlington volunteer had this to share with us about Mama Bear: “She is such a great girl! Mama Bear is very low key, very polite and so wanting to please you. She is wonderful with other dogs and takes everything in stride!” Click here to view more photos of Mama Bear.
RADAR paid all of Mama Bear’s $276 heartworm treatment costs.
