This is Maple’s story, and it isn’t sugar-coated. Maple is an 11-year-old Chihuahua mix. He was brought to the Mercer County Animal Shelter on September 29th by someone who said he was a stray. Except, they must have said “she” because Maple was first thought to be a female. Adding injury to insult, Maple was given 10 days to get adopted or rescued before going on the euthanasia list. It seemed like it would take a miracle to save Maple.
Carol Free and her Almost Heaven Golden Retriever Rescue in West Virginia were at the shelter on October 20th rescuing a group of dogs. Carol spotted Maple and couldn’t walk away from him. Her heart went out to this senior who could barely walk due to stiffness from arthritis. Carol said, “My heart lies with the senior dogs who are passed over by the other groups. I understand why (finances and long-term care are always huge issues), but I just find it impossible to leave them behind to die alone in a shelter.” We were contacted to see if RADAR could assist. We said agreed, and with RADAR’s offer, Carol was able to take Maple!
Maple got his initial vetting and senior blood tests done on November 3rd. Carol reports that since starting on a daily low-dose anti-inflammatory, Maple has turned over a new leaf. He “pops up” to go outside, has a spring in his step, and clearly enjoys life. He is described as “a great little dog” who would be a sweet friend to some lucky person! RADAR paid all $240 of the initial vetting and senior blood test costs for Maple.
UPDATE! All funds for Maple have been raised! Thank you!
UPDATE Maple went to the Rainbow Bridge on September 28, 2015. This senior dog was doing well in rescue, and was responding well to his arthritis medication. He was a playful older gentleman Unfortunately, he recently had a stroke and his health quickly deteriorated. RIP Maple.
