To paraphrase the lyrics from “Maria” from West Side Story, “Maria! You’ve just met a girl named Maria, And suddenly that name will never be the same to you.” Maria is a five-year-old Beagle mix who ended up as a stray on January 17th at the Surry County Animal Control shelter in North Carolina. Perhaps she outlived her usefulness as a hunting dog or puppy producer. Maria tested heartworm positive and had a large mammary tumor.
Mayberry 4 Paws in North Carolina, an organization that helps facilitate and find rescues for the at-risk dogs at this shelter, asked for RADAR’s help with Maria on January 18th. As an incentive for a rescue to pull Maria, we provided an offer to assist with her heartworm treatment costs. On January 26th, Lighthouse Animal Shelter in Massachusetts came forward to take Maria.
On February 22nd, Maria had her heartworm treatment done. “Marie is super sweet!” the rescue told us. “She is great with the other dogs and kids in her foster home. She’s a laid-back, easygoing girl.” Click here to view more photos of Maria.
RADAR paid all of Maria’s heartworm treatment costs, which totaled $265.
UPDATE! All funds for Maria have been raised! Thank you!
