The original Mario was always trying to rescue Princess Peach, but this Mario was in need of his own rescue. Who would save Super Mario? One to two years old and a mix of Shepherd, Mountain Cur and Cattle Dog, Mario was picked by animal control on February 5th. He was taken to the Darlington County Humane Society shelter in South Carolina, where he tested heartworm positive.
Susan Blakeney, RADAR’s liaison with the Darlington County Humane Society Rescue, happened to be at the shelter when Mario arrived. “It was very sad,” Susan said, “Here was this big, solid guy looking so sad and downtrodden. But he was such a mild-mannered guy. We went for a walk, and he was a polite and gentle slow-mover. He rewarded the petting and attention he received with a few tentative tail swishes, and you could tell it would not take him long to get fully warmed up.”
But Mario had no adopter or rescue interest. In mid-March he was included on the shelter’s put to sleep list for March 25th. In an effort to save Mario, on March 21st RADAR provided an offer to assist with his heartworm treatment as an incentive for a rescue to take him. With his time up, Susan convinced Caring for Creatures in Virginia, where she also volunteers, to take Mario! He received his heartworm treatment on March 31st. RADAR paid all of Mario’s heartworm treatment costs, which totaled $322.
