There were high hopes for Maurice. But sometimes things take an unexpected wrong turn. Maurice is a two to three-year-old Mountain Cur mix. He arrived as stray on May 1st at the Darlington County Humane Society shelter in South Carolina. Like so many dogs in the Carolinas, Maurice tested heartworm positive. This greatly lessened the likelihood of him being adopted or rescued and greatly increased the likelihood of him being euthanized.
Things were looking up for Maurice on June 1st when Home At Last Dog Rescue in Pennsylvania offered to take him if his heartworm treatment costs could be provided. Susan Blakeney, RADAR’s liaison with the Darlington County Humane Society Rescue, urgently requested our help. If we agreed, Maurice could get his treatment started the next day. Of course we agreed. Sadly, that was the end of the good news for Maurice.
Following Maurice’s initial heartworm treatment on June 2nd, the vet was not optimistic that he would ever be healthy enough to receive the rest of his heartworm treatment. Additional tests and x-rays indicated that his heart is enlarged and his lungs are scarred and full of fluid. Maurice is in advanced heartworm disease. The vet felt that Maurice needs a hospice home for whatever time he has left.
“Maurice is such a terrific fellow,” Susan told us after meeting him in May at the shelter. “He’s handsome, affable and so happy to please you. He’s poised, polite and ready to be your faithful companion. He loved getting his belly rubbed, and enjoyed being around people.” Susan, like the rest of us, was heartbroken by the devastating diagnosis. To view more photos of Maurice, click here.
RADAR paid all of Maurice’s heartworm diagnosis and treatment costs, which totaled $354.
UPDATE! All funds for Maurice have been raised! Thank you!
UPDATE! A hospice foster home has been found for Maurice! His new foster Mom saw Maurice’s story on our Facebook page, and contacted us about him.
UPDATE! Maurice, known affectionately as MoJo by his foster family, has been adopted… by his foster family! But that’s not were the good news ends! Maurice is also officially heartworm-free! His initial treatment was 16 months ago, and he wasn’t expected to survive. He had been on the “slow-kill” treatment since arriving in Pennsylvania, with his now forever Mom, Jen. She tells us that her “goal was to provide loving end of life care… but MoJo decided otherwise. He has healed himself, and decided to live life, for hopefully many years ahead!”
