Sometimes even a shepherd needs some shepherding. And that was the case with Mecala. Estimated to be seven years old, this Shepherd-Akita mix arrived as a stray at the Rowan County Animal Shelter in Kentucky on September 23rd. As is usually the case with strays, no one came looking for Mecala. She was described as being very thin, but very friendly and playful. She stood out with her sweet ways and very expressive eyes. Meanwhile, her life was on the line at the shelter.

Fortunately, STAR (Saving the Animals of Rowan) in Kentucky shepherded Mecala to safety! STAR participates in the Morehead State University Veterinary Technology Program (MSU-VTP). Once a month several STAR dogs get a week of vet care and treatment at a greatly reduced cost, which RADAR is covering in full this Fall. One of five STAR dogs RADAR sponsored for October was Mecala.

During the week of October 21st, while Mecala was having her initial vetting done at MSU-VTP, she tested heartworm positive. She received her heartworm treatment the same day! The crew at MSU-VTP described Mecala has having a very mellow demeanor.

Another good shepherd came along for Mecala in form of Pat Needham, her foster mom. With Pat stepping up to help, Mecala was able to recuperate in the quiet and comfort of a foster home. Her foster mom shared this with us: “Mecala gets along well with my three dogs. I don’t think I have ever heard her bark. She walks well on a leash, and prefers to sleep in a crate at night in my bedroom. She does want to be near me. Mecala has definitely been someone’s inside pet. She is a great dog!” Click here to view more photos of Mecala.

RADAR paid all of Mecala’s veterinary care and heartworm treatment costs of $85.
