There’s no use delvin’ into the past of Melvin because simply we do not know his history. What we do know is that Melvin and his brother Burney were found running loose in a rural area and taken to Sampson County Animal Shelter in North Carolina on March 7th. The two-year-old Labrador Retriever-Hound mixes both had the misfortune of being heartworm positive. Time was not on their side at this rural kill shelter.

The Sampson County Friends For Animals in North Carolina reached out to RADAR for help with Melvin and Burney on March 23rd. If we would cover the costs of their heartworm treatment, the group would pull the dogs and find a rescue for them. We agreed. Melvin and Burney received their heartworm treatment on April 6th. Meanwhile, Animal Sanctuary Society rescue in New Jersey agreed to take both Melvin and Burney! They were transported to New Jersey on April 9th.

“Melvin is a joy!” Charlotte Tran of the Animal Sanctuary Society told us. “He is so gentle and so appreciative to have been saved. He pushes his head against you when he is getting petted, because he just can’t get close enough to you. Your help for his heartworm treatment really changed the world for him!” To view more photos of Melvin, click here.

RADAR paid all $151 of the heartworm treatment costs for Melvin.
