Sometimes it pays to think outside the box, or in this case, outside the shelter kennel! In an inexpensive and innovative twist, RADAR’s assistance for Missy, along with DeeDee and Marlowe, was part of a domino effect that ended up saving the lives of three other dogs scheduled to be euthanized at the Chester County Animal Care & Control shelter in South Carolina. The shelter had gone 11 months without euthanizing any dogs for space, but by late July the shelter was way beyond capacity. A list of dogs were given an “expiration date” of July 25th.
While Missy was on that list, this one-year-old Lab-Pit Bull mix, who had arrived at the shelter on June 11th, got a rescue commitment on July 23rd! Survivor Tails Animal Rescue in Massachusetts agreed to take Missy, DeeDee and Marlowe. But until the three dogs could be transported on August 2nd, they were taking up much-needed kennel space at the shelter. So even though they were safe, they were putting three other dogs at risk of being euthanized. The rescue was under pressure to find the funds to board the dogs.
In a collaborative effort, RADAR agreed to cover the temporary boarding costs for Missy, Dee Dee and Marlowe. This got them out of the shelter, and provided crucial space to save the lives of three other dogs. Because of a RADAR assistance offer, Survivor Tails Animal Rescue was able to take another dog, Spot, who was also scheduled to die on July 25th. Thanks to the extraordinary efforts of so many, no dogs were euthanized on that day.
