Missy could be the inspiration for the saying “happy as a dog with two tails.” But Missy is also a dog with two tales, and one of them is sad. Missy was a beloved family pet for all nine years of her life, until one day Missy’s owner became ill and was hospitalized. The owner’s wife couldn’t care for Missy, so the loyal companion was handed over on December 12th to the Darlington County Humane Society shelter in South Carolina. Missy was put in a kennel in a noisy stressful high-kill shelter. To make matters worse, Missy tested positive for heartworms. Would anyone want this old Shepherd mix with an expensive medical condition?
Susan Blakeney is RADAR’s liaison with the Darlington County Humane Society Rescue. If anyone can put a happy ending on a sad dog tale, Susan can. Susan saw that Missy had been given a “put to sleep” date of February 17th. Any time after that date, Missy could be euthanized. On February 11th Susan asked us for help with the cost of Missy’s heartworm treatment as an incentive for a rescue to pull Missy. We provided an offer to cover the cost, and on February 12th Missy was safe with One Life to Live Pet Rescue and Adoption in Pennsylvania! Missy had her heartworm treatment on March 2nd.
Shelter staff say that Missy is a very happy senior, was one of the happiest dogs at the shelter. Her joy is infectious. She jumps up and grins when she sees someone coming to say hello. Missy is not very interested in treats or toys; she is happiest when she is hanging out with people, not having to interact or participate. She just wants to savor her happy ending. RADAR paid all of Missy’s heartworm treatment costs, which totaled $240.
