The month of March was a bit much for Morty! The owners of this seven to eight-year-old Beagle mix decided they no longer wanted Morty. So he was surrendered to the Mercer County Animal Shelter in Princeton, WV, on March 8th. As an older dog, and with an obvious need for dental care, he was already at risk. However, Morty was even more at risk at this shelter, which has recently begun an aggressive euthanasia policy under orders from local government officials.
The volunteers who advocate for the animals at this shelter got the word out about Morty. With RADAR already partnering with these volunteers to save as many dogs as possible at this shelter, on March 15th we made an offer to help cover his initial vetting costs and dental treatment as an incentive for a rescue to take him. The very next day, Canine Guardians for Life in New Hampshire, agreed to take Morty!
Morty had his initial vetting, dental treatment and neutering done on March 19th. While he tested negative for heartworm, poor Morty did indeed need dental work: he had to have 13 teeth extracted! Following his vetting, Morty was in a temporary foster home until his March 29th transport to New Hampshire. All in all, quite the month for Morty! To view more photos of Morty, click here.
RADAR paid $189 of Morty’s initial vetting, dental care and neutering costs of $264. The $75 difference was covered by a Mercer County donor’s sponsorship made directly to the vet.
UPDATE! All funds for Morty have been raised! Thank you!
UPDATE! Morty has been adopted! From Morty’s new Mom, “Edwina, at age 15, is very glad to have Morty here, and they are excellent company for each other. They’re always close together. Poor little Edwina is constantly getting whacked in the face by Morty’s wagging tail, but she doesn’t seem to take it personally! He’s such a great dog, so funny and happy and lovable, I can hardly express how glad I am to have him. He is just absolutely the perfect dog for us. He really is a velcro dog!”
