Nieko is a variant of the name Niko, which means “victory of the people.” This Nieko, a three-year-old Lab mix, needed a victory after a few hard losses. He arrived at the Hampton County Animal Shelter in South Carolina as a stray sometime in late April. But with Hampton County already overflowing with animals, the Mary Ann Morris Animal Society (MAMAS) shelter in Bamberg County in South Carolina took Nieko on May 8th. While Nieko’s history wasn’t clear, one thing was for sure: he was heartworm positive.

Laura’s Hope Rescue in Pennsylvania was interested in pulling Nieko from the shelter. To make it happen, MAMAS needed to find help with the cost of his heartworm treatment. On May 22nd, Ruthie Rish with MAMAS asked if we could help, and we said yes! Nieko received his treatment on May 29th.

“He is super friendly and gets along with most dogs,” Ruthie told us. “He is a great dog who deserves a home. He’s going to make someone very, very happy.” Click here to view more photos of Nieko.

RADAR paid all of Nieko’s heartworm treatment costs, which totaled $263.
