Patty is something of a living legend in Highland County, Virginia. This ten-year-old Blue Heeler was well known for her appearances at the annual Highland County Maple Festival, which was held at the Puffenbarger’s sugar camp and farm. Ivan and Sue Puffenbarger adopted Patty as a puppy from a shelter. Patty was a loyal companion to Ivan through good times and bad, including a fire that destroyed their house and sugar camp, and a stroke that confined Ivan to a wheelchair until his passing last year. Sue, who also had a stroke, had to move into assisting living this year. Sadly, Sue had nowhere to place Patty, who was now blind, and contemplated having her euthanized. But on April 1st, Dot Terry with her Little Big Dog Rescue in Highland County offered to take Patty!
On June 27th, Peggy Marshall, a board member with Little Big Dog Rescue, reached out to RADAR to see if we could help with Patty. Ideally, Patty could have at least some vision restored if the cataracts in one or both eyes could be removed. We agreed to assist. The first step was to get her eyes examined and tested by a veterinary ophthalmologist, which took place In Richmond, Virginia, on July 14th.
Dot had this to share with us: “Unfortunately, the evaluation and tests revealed that Patty has retinal degeneration, so she is blind with or without the cataracts. But this sweet, smart, cheerful, ultra-pleasant Blue Heeler is still a happy camper. She got to go on a long car ride and meet new people. She could do that every day—except for the expense! Thanks to RADAR for underwriting the examination.” Be sure to view more photos in Patty’s gallery.
RADAR paid all of Patty’s eye examination and testing costs, which totaled $396.
