Penelope

Penelope is a name that means faithful. And this Penelope would like nothing better than to be someone’s faithful friend! Two years old and a Pit Bull mix, Penelope arrived at the Darlington County Humane Society shelter in South Carolina on April 15th. She was picked up as a stray by animal control. Her right eye was cloudy as a result of an infection, for which she has been treated (her eye is still cloudy). The combination of Penelope being a Pit Bull mix and heartworm positive put her life at great risk. Sure enough, she showed up on the shelter’s “Put To Sleep” list for the last week of May.

On May 24th, RADAR provided an offer to cover Penelope’s heartworm treatment costs as an incentive for a rescue to take her. On May 29th, a rescue agreed to take Penelope, if Penelope proved to be good with all dogs. She had her heartworm treatment done on June 17th. Unfortunately, Penelope isn’t good with other female dogs, so the rescue could not take her.

Susan Blakeney, RADAR’s liaison with the Darlington County Humane Society Rescue spent some time with Penelope at the shelter, and had this to share: “She is a gentle soul. Penelope was a sweet and steady companion on our walk. She stuck right beside me, and whenever I stopped she would sit and look up at me for direction. When we stopped to have a seat, Penelope sat down right beside me and rested her paw on my leg! Her eyes closed as I petted her like she was so grateful for the attention, and she gave me gentle kisses. She has a wonderful smile which she flashed each time I told her how pretty she was!” To see more photos of Penelope, click here.

RADAR paid all of Penelope’s heartworm treatment costs, which totaled $247.

UPDATE! All funds for Penelope have been raised! Thank you!

UPDATE! Penelope is doing well in her foster home. We’ve been told that, “Penelope is a sweet, polite lady who was marked as not getting along with females thereby losing her rescue. Her foster has matched her up with females without issue.”

UPDATE! Penelope has been adopted!
