What do you know, our Poe has something in common with Edgar Allan Poe: they both went to foster homes at around the same age! A year after Edgar Poe’s birth, his father abandoned the family, and a year later after his mother died, he was fostered by the Allan family, from which he derived his middle name. As for this Poe, he’s a two- to three-year-old Lab mix who was admitted to the Lee County Animal Shelter in South Carolina as a stray on May 11th. The combination of being a larger black dog and heartworm positive made Poe much more at risk at this small rural shelter.

On July 24th, Brandi Sowell, RADAR’s liaison with the Lee County Animal Shelter, asked for our help with Poe. Maple Leaf Mutts rescue in Vermont would take him if help could be found for funding his heartworm treatment costs. We agreed to assist, which secured his rescue placement! Shortly thereafter, he made his way to Vermont and his foster family. He received his first heartworm treatment on September 24th.

The rescue had this to say about Poe: “He’s very friendly, has a medium energy level and is good with other dogs. He even did ok during cat testing! We felt he might chase a running cat, but did great with our cats. Poe does need some help learning basic manners, like not jumping on people, and sitting at the door! He is your typical happy-go-lucky Lab.” Click here to view more photos of Poe.

RADAR paid all the costs of Poe’s first heartworm treatment, which totaled $359.
