Pokey went from being in the pokey (the shelter) to doing the Hokey Pokey! On May 4th this approximately seven to eight year-old Chihuahua mix was surrendered to the Mercer County Animal Shelter in West Virginia. Things began to go downhill for Pokey and his two canine companions when their owner lost her home. For nearly three months they all were living out of a car. When their owner realized that this was not a viable option, she surrendered them to the shelter.
Because the other two dogs were younger, it wasn’t long before they were adopted. But with poor Pokey being older, he lingered at the shelter, and ended up on the euthanasia list for May 24th.
The dedicated team with the Mercer County Volunteers spread the word about Pokey. On May 12th, as an incentive for a rescue to take Pokey, RADAR provided an offer to assist. A few days later Paws for Seniors in Virginia agreed to take Pokey!
Pokey had his initial vetting and neutering done on May 24th, the day he was to be euthanized. Luckily, he tested heartworm negative. Jim and Brenda Scamordella of Paws for Seniors shared this with us about Pokey: “He could be even older than seven or eight, but he has such a wonderful character and still is very active. Paws for Seniors feels that it won’t take long for Pokey to find his loving forever home!” Click here to see more photos of Pokey.
RADAR paid all of the $195 bill for Pokey’s initial vetting and neutering.
