Pretty’s story is pretty amazing! This two-year-old Boxer-Pit Bull mix arrived on May 18th at the Mercer County Animal Shelter in West Virginia. Pretty and her ten(!) pups were found under an abandoned house by an animal control officer. Although otherwise healthy, Pretty was severely emaciated. While all ten pups were adopted or taken by rescues, Pretty lingered on at the shelter. She adored people and longed for human contact. When someone approached her kennel, Pretty would bounce to the gate, wiggly and happy, wagging her whole body desperate to be petted! Just a touch through the gate would make her content.

When Pretty ended up on the shelter’s urgent list, RADAR provided an offer of assistance as an incentive for a rescue to take her, and a rescue took her! Pretty stayed with a temporary foster before moving to her long-term foster without any issues. But when Pretty moved to her long-term foster, she spent some of her time in a kennel. When the foster would approach the kennel area for feeding, the other foster dogs would get excited, and this flustered Pretty. The foster determined that she was unable to keep Pretty safely within her kennel, and the rescue was concerned that they would not be able to manage Pretty, so they decided not to commit to her after all.

With all that Pretty had been through, she now faced being returned to the shelter. A group of shelter volunteers found a temporary foster for her while they tried to find another rescue. RADAR’s assistance offer was still in place. Fortunately, the Southern WV Animal League in West Virginia agreed to take Pretty! The rescue’s commitment to Pretty included sending her to a behaviorist for training and boarding. Following her initial vetting, she was spayed on August 28th. RADAR paid all $68 of Pretty’s initial vetting costs and all $77 of her spaying costs, for a total of $145.
