Mars is called the Red Planet, but this stellar dog is called Red Bandit! Two years old and a Collie mix, he was brought to the Darlington County Humane Society shelter in South Carolina by animal control on May 31st. The handsome Red Bandit should have been adopted or taken by a rescue in no time at all, but Red Bandit was heartworm positive. As June turned to July, Red Bandit found himself increasingly at risk. The shelter’s PTS (Put To Sleep) list for July 17th included Red Bandit.
Through the tireless work of the Darlington County Humane Society volunteers, a rescue was found for Red Bandit! There was just one catch: they could only take him if his heartworm treatment costs could be covered. On July 14th, Susan Blakeney, RADAR’s liaison with the Darlington County Humane Society volunteers, sought our help. We immediately agreed, and the deal was done for All 4 Paws Rescue in Pennsylvania to take Red Bandit!
Normally, a dog like Red Bandit would promptly be scheduled for his heartworm treatment. But the vet determined that Red Bandit was not well enough and needed to gain some weight. Fortunately, a temporary foster home was found for him. Then when he was well enough, the heartworm medication was out of stock! Finally, on August 27th, Red Bandit had his heartworm treatment done. RADAR paid all $272 of Red Bandit’s heartworm treatment costs.
