Hi there! It’s me, Reggie! I’ve been asked to tell you my story. I’m about three or four years old and a Labrador Retriever mix. Some think that I might have some Great Dane in my mix. Weighing in at over 100 lbs., I’m a big boy! My story starts back on October 31st. I was just minding my own business when, the next thing I know, I was picked up by something called animal control. And off I went to the Darlington County Humane Society shelter in South Carolina. I did not like it there one bit, but what was I going to do? Since I was a large black dog and heartworm positive, everyone seemed to pass me by.
It was no fun spending Thanksgiving, and then Christmas, all alone in the shelter. The New Year brought the grim reality that I might not make it out of the shelter alive. But then, in mid-February, Long Trail Canine Rescue in Vermont expressed interest in taking me. Yes, me! But there was one hitch: the rescue could not afford my costly heartworm treatment. A very nice lady, named Susan Blakeney, asked a group called RADAR if they would help me. And they said they would! Susan found some kind donors to pay half of my heartworm treatment, and RADAR would pay the other half.
My heartworm treatment took place on February 25th. Thank goodness that’s done! I’ve been told that I’m a very mild-mannered gentleman, and a joy to take for a walk. I do love treats! After visiting with me at the shelter, Susan had this to say about me: “Reggie is truly a gentle giant! This boy tugged at my my heartstrings because he seemed a bit sad, like he really didn’t expect much from life. Reggie nuzzled his giant head against my leg and placed his big paw in my hand, and then he rolled over on his back and let me scratch his belly!” Thanks to everyone who helped me! RADAR paid $264 to cover half of Reggie’s heartworm treatment costs.
