It’s a good thing Ruby didn’t take her love to town when she recently found herself homeless. Abandoned by one family, the last thing Ruby needed was more mouths to feed. Ruby and her canine BFF Roxy lost both their family and their home when their owners were evicted. On January 9th, after being left on the empty property for several days, the dogs were taken to the Montgomery County Animal Control shelter in North Carolina. Ruby and Roxy had always been outside dogs, but that did not protect them from the hardship of being kenneled in outside area for impounded dogs. Even worse, the bonded pair could not be kenneled together. Within a day both dogs were shutting down from exposure, stress and depression.
Best Friend Pet Adoption, a rescue based in North Carolina, agreed to take the dogs if funding could be found for their vetting costs. Alesja Daehnrich, the rescue’s outreach coordinator requested RADAR’s help on January 11th. We agreed, and on January 13th Ruby and Roxy were fighting for who gets the front seat on their freedom ride. They sang “We Gotta Get Out Of This Place” all the way to their foster home!
Ruby is a three to four-year-old German Shepherd-Husky mix. She received her initial vetting on January 14th. Luckily, she tested heartworm negative. As the elder of the pair, Ruby is no newbie; but indoor living is a novel concept and she is adjusting well. Ruby’s foster mom says, “Ruby is one gorgeous girl! Not only does she have the looks, but she is as sweet as she is pretty. She is very friendly and affectionate to everyone she meets, and already knows ‘sit’ and ‘shake.’ She is used to living with other dogs and seems to get along well with new dogs. Ruby has a calm and pleasant demeanor.” Ruby is such a gem that her foster family has adopted her! To view more photos of Ruby, click here.
RADAR paid $150 towards Ruby’s initial vetting costs.
