It was deep in December when Ruby’s world was turned upside down. Instead of enjoying the holidays in the comforts of home, three-year-old Ruby found herself in the cold confines of a shelter. Her owner died and there were no relatives, so Ruby, a Feist mix, was taken to the Sampson County Animal Shelter in North Carolina on December 21st. The shelter reported that Ruby was sad and depressed from the loss of her owner, and scared and bewildered in the stressful shelter environment. Little did Ruby know that her situation was even more dire than she realized because of testing heartworm positive.

On January 9th, RADAR received a request to help Ruby from the Sampson County Friends For Animals in North Carolina. Saver of Souls Pet Rescue in Virginia was interested in taking Ruby if they could get help with her heartworm treatment costs. We agreed to assist and Ruby was safe! She received her initial heartworm treatment January 19th.

“Ruby is as beautiful inside as she is out,” the rescue told us. “Ruby is not letting the past impede her transformation into an amazing canine companion. Ruby is an inquisitive girl, and adores walks and outdoor times that allow her to explore sights and smells. Her love of the outdoors does not keep her from seeking out a soft bed with a squeaky-toy (she is even generous enough to share the bed with a feline friend!) or from finding a seat on the sofa for a tummy rub. Ruby is a wonderful and gentle dog who, given her past, is still sensitive to sudden noises and movement, but is successfully making a new life full of the things every animal deserves.” To view more photos of Ruby, click here.

RADAR paid $250 towards the heartworm treatment costs for Ruby.
