One would have to be a real doofus not to want to help save Rufus! Two to three years old, Rufus is a Carolina Dog mix who arrived on May 23rd at the Darlington County Humane Society shelter in South Carolina. The older person who owned Rufus had died, so he was sent to the shelter to await his fate. Poor Rufus was totally terrified at the shelter. To add to his woes, he was also heartworm positive. The shelter was overflowing, and with no rescue or adopter interest in Rufus, he ended up on the “Put To Sleep” list for the first week of June.
On May 31st, Susan Blakeney, RADAR’s liaison with the Darlington County Humane Society Rescue, asked if we could provide an offer to cover the cost of the heartworm treatment for Rufus as an incentive for a rescue to take him. Just as the shelter was overwhelmed with dogs, RADAR was also deluged with assistance requests. We put out an urgent appeal, and several dedicated donors quickly pledged enough to enable us to provide our offer for Rufus.
On June 1st, One Life to Live Rescue and Adoption in Pennsylvania agreed to take Rufus. However, they first wanted to be sure that he was not aggressive since he was so frightened and shy at the shelter. Fortunately, a temporary local foster was found so that Rufus could be better evaluated. He very slowly came out of his shell, and best of all, showed absolutely no signs of aggression. The rescue confirmed that they would take Rufus, and have a foster waiting for him.
Rufus had his heartworm treatment done on July 26th. His temporary foster mom had this to tell us about Rufus: “It was all small steps. He did well with our other dogs; he wagged his tail and played with them. I did have to carry him outside. He would not move! I would sit outside with them early in the morning, and he would come up to my chair and let me pet him! I was worried about this boy the first day. The way he would run from us. He is still a little shy but coming around nicely.” Click here to see more photos of Rufus.
RADAR paid all of the heartworm treatment costs for Rufus, which totaled $228.
