Rusty may have arrived at the Columbus County Animal Shelter in North Carolina with some dust on his handsome reddish with black accents coat, as he was picked up as a stray on April 28th. This friendly three-year-old Hound-Sharpei mix tested positive for heartworms in a crowded, rural shelter. Rusty would need some trusty friends to finance his heartworm treatment.
On May 10th, Madi Joselyn of the Burlington County Animal Alliance (BCAA) rescue in New Jersey stepped up to be a friend to Rusty and asked RADAR to be a friend to Rusty too! We agreed to help with Rusty’s heartworm treatment costs and now Rusty had some good friends on his side. Rusty had his back-to-back heartworm treatments on June 23rd and 24th. His rescue took care of his entropion surgery.
BCAA has gotten to know Rusty. He likes to play with other dogs, especially favoring a game of tug of war. He’s very good with children. Rusty has a calm and friendly personality and thinks everyone is his friend. He enjoys a good walk but also enjoys a good nap. Snuggling with kids is a favorite nighttime routine. Rusty also is a great car rider. Rusty is a family-friendly dog looking for a home. Be sure to view more photos in Rusty’s gallery.
UPDATE Madi contacted RADAR on July 18th to let us know that Rusty is in heart failure. They have run some tests, and RADAR has agreed to pick-up some of those costs. The vet feels that his heart issues can be managed. Madi told us, “he’s so young and sweet, we just think it’s worth a shot if it can be managed and he responded well to the Lasix.” Rusty’s foster is a nurse, so he will be in good hands.
UPDATE Rusty passed away in the early morning hours of July 24, 2020. Madi contacted us and told us, “I have some sad news, Rusty had seemed to be doing better yesterday, we thought the meds were starting to help but he passed away in his sleep last night.” Rest in Peace, Rusty.
RADAR paid all of Rusty’s heartworm treatment costs and additional testing, x-rays, echocardiogram and medications, which totaled $1,289.
UPDATE! All funds for Rusty have been raised! Thank you!
While RADAR is no longer asking for donations for our nonprofit, we ask that you check out some of our rescue partners and make a donation to one or more of them.
