Hi, I am Sam, or as Dr. Seuss might say, Sam-I-Am! I am a Labrador Retriever mix with eight years experience of being man’s best friend. I used to have a home, but then on September 30th, I was surrendered to a cold, scary place known as the Aiken County Animal Shelter in South Carolina. I really don’t know why I had to go there. To make matters worse, I learned that I was heartworm positive. At this shelter that meant that I was not eligible for adoption. My only way out of the shelter alive would be if a rescue saved me.
October 10th was my double-lucky day. Purr-Fect Match Animal Rescue in Wisconsin was interested in taking me! But only if they could get help with my heartworm treatment costs. They requested RADAR’s help. The folks at RADAR said I was the perfect poster child, I mean poster dog, for them since I was older, black and heartworm positive. They agreed to help and I was safe! My much-needed heartworm treatment took place on October 22nd. Then things really started to get better for me.
I packed my bags for my Thanksgiving weekend Freedom Ride! That sure sounded like fun! I was headed to Wisconsin with a canine buddy Hank. That was one wild trip! We drove for two days, but we were able to meet lots of nice folks, and we even had a sleepover in Indianapolis. Boy was I tired! We had a long second day of travel and I saw snow for the first time! Wow, did it look like fun to bite at!
My new foster mom says I am a very gentle soul. I don’t bark, I don’t chew things, and I love to cuddle. I will follow you around as I love to be close to you. I walk well on a leash and come back if you whistle for me. I love to eat and even do a Happy Dance for my breakfast! My ideal home would be in a place where I can have a soft bed and lots of toys. I do like those chewing sticks a lot! I am now healthy and ready for a forever home! To see more photos of me, click here.
RADAR paid $250 towards Sam’s heartworm treatment costs.
