Sampson is a big dog who needed a big break. And thanks to the swift generosity of RADAR’s saintly supporters, that’s exactly what this St. Bernard got! On July 10th, five-year-old Sampson was surrendered by his owners to the Darlington County Humane Society shelter in South Carolina. Sampson’s family had fallen on hard times and was unable to properly care for him. He was terribly underweight and had a severe ear infection that became abscessed.
Sampson went directly to the vet for emergency treatment. He had to be completely shaved, which revealed that he also had puncture wounds on his head, left side and hind end. Kept outside in the heat and humidity of summer with his long fur, his skin had become raw and was infested with maggots. Oh, and he was also heartworm positive. Following his initial vet care, Sampson spent the summer in special-needs boarding waiting for the miracle of a rescue commitment. His heartworm treatment would be delayed until a rescue could be found.
On September 16th, a double miracle occurred. First, All 4 Paws Rescue in Pennsylvania offered to take Sampson if his heartworm treatment costs were covered. A treatment opening was available the next day. Since Sampson is a big dog, his treatment was estimated to cost approximately $500. RADAR got an urgent request early that evening from Susan Blakeney, our liaison with the Darlington County Humane Society volunteers, asking for our help. The second miracle happened when we made an urgent appeal to our donors for Sampson. Within just a few hours all the needed funds were raised!
On September 17th, Sampson had his heartworm treatment done. He also received a second ear treatment (RADAR also covered his first treatment done on August 28th). Susan had this to share with us about Sampson: “He is a friendly dog with lots of energy and craves attention from anybody. Sampson is so sweet!” Click here to view more photos of Sampson.
RADAR paid all $513 for Sampson’s heartworm treatment and two ear treatments.
