Meet Shakira, a dog whose “Hips Don’t Lie.” Named for the wildly popular chart-topping, belly-dancing Colombian performer, Shakira loves belly rubs and wiggles her hips happily when she gets them. This pretty one to two-year old-Bully Breed mix was picked up by animal control and brought to the Darlington County Humane Society shelter in South Carolina on January 16th. She was heartworm positive, which would be very expensive to treat for a rescue or adopter. She looked much like all the other black dogs with white markings at the shelter, which meant she got overlooked. Poor Shakira, your good qualities were hidden “Underneath Your Clothes.”

Susan Blakeney, RADAR’s liaison with the Darlington County Humane Society Rescue, is a big Shakira fan. When Shakira got placed on the euthanasia list for February 3rd, she told Susan to “Try Everything.” Shakira was more than ready to go “Whenever, Wherever.” Susan contacted us on January 28th to ask for our help. We provided an offer to cover the cost of Shakira’s heartworm treatment. On February 4th, One Life to Live Pet Rescue and Adoption in Pennsylvania committed to take Shakira! She had her heartworm treatment on February 9th.

Shakira is a friendly dog who made a good impression on everyone who met her at the shelter. The day she left the shelter, Shakira shook for joy, leaving behind her the “Waka Waka” sound of her ears flapping and her tags jingling. To view more photos of Shakira, click here.

RADAR paid all of Shakira’s heartworm treatment costs, which totaled $252.
