Say ‘Hiya’ to Shya! Her story is one that went from heartbreaking to heartwarming. Shya is approximately six years old and a Hound mix. She was picked up as a stray by animal control and taken to the Lenoir County SPCA shelter in North Carolina in mid-November. It was obvious that Shya had been on her own for a long time. Not only was she emaciated, but she had an old injury to her front right leg. It had been broken and healed in a very unusual way. A vet who evaluated her did not think Shya was in pain; however, he was concerned about her having arthritis in the leg. She did walk and put weight on the leg, but sometimes she held it up. All of this made it all the more difficult for Shya to find a rescue.
Upon learning of Shya’s plight on November 24th, RADAR immediately provided an offer to assist with her vetting as an incentive for a rescue to take her. After waiting many weeks and spending the holidays alone in the shelter with an uncertain future, Shya was finally rescued by New England-based Friends of Homeless Animals on January 4th! A partner rescue, Brother Wolf Animal Rescue in North Carolina, provided a foster for Shya. After several evaluations by orthopedic surgeons, it was clear that something had to be done to the leg: either amputation or surgically re-breaking and re-setting the leg. The decision was made to re-break and re-set the leg.
Shya had her leg surgery done on January 20th. Two days later, she was back in her foster home and in great spirits! We were told this: “Shya has a cast up to her elbow that will remain in place for at least six weeks. She will go to the doctor weekly for bandage changes. Once she gets the cast off, she will have a period of six weeks in which the doctor wants her to go on leash walks to build some strength back in the leg. Physical therapy likely won’t be necessary. The surgery itself went great. She will have a little sexy swagger as the leg will be slightly shorter than her other. So far, so good!” To view more photos of Shya, including some with her cast, click here.
RADAR paid $200 towards the costs of Shya’s leg surgery.
