Some of you might remember “Smokey Robinson and the Miracles.” Well, this is the tail of “Smokey and the Miracle!” Approximately five years old and a German Shepherd mix, Smokey was surrendered by his owner to the Chester County Animal Care & Control shelter in South Carolina on December 22nd. With his life at risk in the shelter, this was not going to be a merry Christmas for Smokey. It would take something close to a miracle to save Smokey; not only was he a somewhat older and larger dog, but he was also heartworm positive.
On January 17th, as an incentive for a rescue to take Smokey, RADAR provided an offer to cover his heartworm treatment costs. Despite endless networking efforts and our offer, week after week went by without any interest. By late March, Smokey’s status had become urgent. He really needed a miracle, and fast.
Then, on April 1st (and fortunately, this was no April Fool’s joke), a woman who had previously adopted from shelter, just happened to decide to come into the shelter in search of a German Shepherd mix to adopt. When she was introduced to Smokey, she instantly fell in love with him, and adopted him! Smokey got his miracle! And through Smokey’s networking efforts, Tamara Diederichs agreed to fully fund Smokey’s heartworm treatment costs! His heartworm treatment took place through the shelter on April 14th and 15th. RADAR paid for all of Smokey’s heartworm treatment, which cost $310.
