Smokey’s story starts with real estate, moves on to team efforts, and then has an international twist with a happy ending! Smokey’s owner was getting a divorce and didn’t know what his housing situation would be. Ideally, it would be best for Smokey to stay in the home that he knew. The new owners agreed to keep Smokey. They soon started renovations. During a thunderstorm, Smokey became frightened and started to chew some wood. His new owners decided he had to go.

On May 23rd, Smokey was surrendered to the Surry County Animal Control shelter in North Carolina. Approximately eight to nine years old, Smokey is a blend of Flat-Coated Retriever, Belgian Shepherd and Sheepdog! With the shelter full and Smokey being a surrendered older black dog, he was in imminent danger of being euthanized.

Mayberry 4 Paws in North Carolina, an organization that helps facilitate and find rescues for the at-risk dogs at this shelter, asked for RADAR’s help with Smokey on May 24h. We provided an offer to assist with his costs to encourage a rescue to take him. With Smokey out of time, on May 25th, Dorsey Patrick and her Jesse’s Place Rescue in South Carolina came forward to pull him on behalf of Julie Stevens in Pennsylvania. Julie serves as a liaison with the SPCA of Western Quebec, and they would be taking Smokey!

Following his temporary boarding while awaiting transport, Smokey crossed the Canadian border on June 4th. A few days later we were told this: “Our handsome boy that everyone worked so hard to get rescued has his forever home in Canada! This boy was a total love bug! I wish they were all as sweet as this boy was and as handsome to boot! Thank you one and all for everything!” Click here to view more photos of Smokey.

RADAR paid all of Smokey’s temporary boarding costs, which totaled $192.
