The name Snookums says it all! And this sweet and gentle three-year-old is a beautifully-brindled mix of Pit Bull and Plott Hound. Snookums was found as a stray on April 1st and taken to the Aiken County Animal Shelter in South Carolina. Like so many dogs in the Southeast, Snookums tested positive for heartworms. At this shelter that meant that she was unable to be adopted. A rescue commitment would be her only way out of the shelter alive.
At-risk heartworm positive dogs at the Aiken shelter are the specialty of Mary Lou Seymour and the The Heart Beat Goes On program. Mary Lou began her efforts to find a rescue for Snookums on April 14th. Without any success, but still undeterred, Mary Lou made another urgent appeal on April 22nd. Shelter Animals Advocates, the parent organization of The Heart Beat Goes On, opted to take Snookums to save her life. However, funding was needed. Mary Lou requested RADAR’s help on April 24th. We agreed and Snookums was safe!
Snookums had her heartworm treatment on May 5th. December Clark, Mary Lou’s partner with The Heart Beat Goes On, had this with to tell us about Snookums: “She has no issues from all reports. She’s just an unlucky gentle mama dog, who’s understandably a little nervous.” Click here to view more photos of Snookums.
RADAR paid $300 towards the heartworm treatment costs for Snookums.
