Sparky didn’t show a spark of his winning personality when he arrived at the Rockingham County Animal Shelter in North Carolina on June 10th. His seriously ill owner had brought the six-year-old Labrador Retriever-Border Collie mix to the shelter because he could no longer care for Sparky. Poor Sparky was terrified in the full shelter, but he had even more reason to be afraid than he knew. Sparky tested heartworm positive, which was a big obstacle to his chances of being adopted or rescued.

Kelly Chalkley of Sunshine Senior Dog Sanctuary in Virginia contacted RADAR about Sparky on July 9th. While kind supporters had raised some funds for Sparky’s expensive heartworm treatment, only with our additional help could the rescue commit to taking him. We agreed to assist and Sparky was safe! He began his heartworm treatment on August 7th.

Sparky’s sweet personality came through even when he was feeling scared in the shelter. He was friendly to people and tested well with other dogs. Now that Sparky is in a foster home, he is all smiles! He is doing great with his foster mom and is making friends with the other dogs and even the foster horse on the property. “Sparky is just a big, sweet goofball,” we were told, “who’s enjoying time with his fellow fosters!” Click here to view more photos of Sparky.

RADAR paid $250 towards Sparky’s heartworm treatment costs.
