Spirit

Wallis Simpson once said, “For a gallant spirit there can never be defeat.” For two-year-old Cattle Dog mix Spirit, there is a lot of truth in that statement. Spirit arrived at the Lenoir County SPCA shelter in North Carolina on May 5th, and little did anyone know, she wasn’t alone! Spirit didn’t seem to complain even though she had every right to, having to carry a litter of puppies in her belly, without even a roof over her head or a meal to enjoy. Shortly after her arrival, Spirit surprised everyone by giving birth to five beautiful pups. As tough as Spirit was, she couldn’t help the fact that she was heartworm positive.

Jennifer Watson with Ruby’s Misfits Animal Rescue in North Carolina submitted a grant application to RADAR for Spirit on May 30th, and we offered to assist in the cost of Spirit’s heartworm treatment. Spirit was pulled from the shelter on that same day. She received her treatment on August 1st and 2nd.

The people at Ruby’s Misfits said this about her: “Spirit is everything you could ever want in a companion. She is sweet and hilarious. She is dog friendly and loves kids! To top it all off, she has the biggest grin that we just can’t seem to catch on camera. She came to us when we found out she was actually a mom and no one knew it until she brought five beautiful babies into the world. She has since completed her mom duties with a perfection we have not seen from any other mom dog we have had thus far. She was nurturing, patient and everything you could want from a mother.” To see more photos of Spirit, click here.

RADAR paid $250 towards the heartworm treatment costs for Spirit.
