STELLLLAAAA!!! Although her situation did not have a dire outcome like Stella from “A Streetcar Named Desire,” this beautiful six-year-old Shepherd mix had a rough couple of years. Stella’s former elderly owner kept her on a six-foot chain in the backyard for the last three years; as a result of this lifestyle, she became arthritic as her muscle tone deteriorated, and she also ended up with heartworms. When her owner was no longer able to care for her, she was surrendered to the Mary Ann Morris Animal Shelter (MAMAS) in Bamberg County in South Carolina on June 12th.

Fortunately, Ruthie Rish at MAMAS knew time was of the essence for Stella given her thick coat, limited cool spaces at the outdoor shelter facility and rising summer temperatures. She submitted an application requesting RADAR’s assistance to cover the costs of Stella’s heartworm treatment. We agreed to help, and Stella got her heartworm treatment on June 27th. She made her way to Pregnant Dog and All Breed Rescue in Pennsylvania on July 1st and is enjoying the love of a foster family and an escape from the high temperatures of the outdoor shelter while she recovered from her treatment.

The rescue had this say about Stella: “She is sweet and affectionate, and just a really, really great dog in need of a great home. Stella is good with everyone she meets, with other dogs and with cats.” With regular activity and time, Stella will improve her muscle tone, removing some of the strain on her joints, and her time chained up in a backyard will fade to a distant memory. When not loving her people, she enjoys lounging on the couch indulging her passion for ‘50s films based on Tennessee Williams’ plays! To see more photos of Stella, click here.

RADAR paid all $285 of the heartworm treatment costs for Stella.
