Eight-year-old Hound mix Sugar is as sweet as her name suggests! This gal was found in Highland County, Virginia, by two traveling Good Samaritans who took her to the Shenandoah Valley Animal Services Center in Augusta County, Virginia, on May 9th. She was transferred to the Highland County Humane Society in Virginia on May 14th for her stray hold. Poor Sugar had several obstacles standing in her way of being adopted. In addition to being a senior and a Hound, she had health problems, including what appeared to be a large mass and a small cyst, both of which needed to be removed and evaluated.

On May 16th, Corena Huffman, president and founder of Highland County Humane Society (HCHS), reached out to RADAR to see if we could help with Sugar. HCHS had a foster lined up for Sugar (the same one who fostered RADAR alumnus Ladybird), but HCHS needed help with her costly medical expenses. We agreed to assist, and Sugar got her blood test and x-ray done on May 14th, as well as the mass and cyst removal and spay on May 22nd. Thankfully, the mass was actually a large hernia, and Sugar was cancer free!

Though Sugar has surely been through the wringer, she never let it bring her spirit down. An HCHS volunteer shared this sweet experience with Sugar: “The first time I met Sugar, all I did was load her into a crate for transport. Didn’t see her again for a whole week, when it was time to transport her again. To my amazement, Sugar recognized me! She greeted me with a wagging tail and endless love. What a sweet, sweet girl!”

On May 30th, Sugar had the good fortune to get adopted! Her new home includes a senior Basset Hound, a senior Lab, two cats and a goat! “Sugar is a very sweet dog with a good disposition,” her adopter said. “She seems to be very happy and contented here. It has been pretty exciting around here. The introductions were for the most part very easy. So all is going well at Sugar’s new home. Sugar is very hard to get pictures of, as she wants to sniff the camera and won’t stand still. And forget trying to take any outside with all the new great smells and sounds!” Be sure to view more photos in Sugar’s gallery.

RADAR paid all of Sugar’s initial vetting, blood test, x-ray, mass removal, cyst removal and spay costs, which totaled $714.
