Thanks to the efforts of so many, there was no need to play “Taps” for Taps! This 18-month-old Hound mix was one of six dogs rescued on February 15th from a dreadful situation. It was bad enough that the six dogs were chained outside, but when their previous owner went to prison on February 4th, their new owner at the same house had a medical condition that prevented the owner from providing proper care to the dogs.
When the volunteers from the Pendleton Animal Welfare Shelter (PAWS) in Pendleton County, West Virginia, arrived on the scene, it was much worse than they had feared. All six dogs were dehydrated and starving, and some unable to stand. The owner surrendered all the dogs to PAWS. The dogs immediately received water, food, vet care and lots of TLC. Despite their appalling condition, all of the dogs pulled through and survived their ordeal.
Pendleton County has no animal shelter, and since it was winter, PAWS had to place all the dogs in temporary boarding. Fortunately, within a few days three of the dogs were taken by a rescue. A fourth dog went to another rescue on March 19th. That still left Taps and his litermate, Mosey, in boarding. In late April, Last Hope Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation in New York agreed to take Taps! He and Mosey ended their boarding on April 29th. Mosey is now being kenneled at the home of PAWS president, Carol Hutchison.
PAWS sent out a plea for funds to help with boarding costs in late February. RADAR agreed to assist with some backstop funding for Taps and Mosey. While PAWS raised enough money from many kind donors to cover most of the boarding, alas, their funds were depleted. RADAR covered the final nine days of boarding and a sendoff bath for both dogs! RADAR paid $94 for the final nine days of boarding (and a bath) for Taps.
