‘Twas the night before July 6th and all through the pound, not a creature was stirring or making a sound. The hands on the clock went around and around; a rescue for Ticker just had to be found. Ticker is a stray who was brought to the Aiken County Animal Shelter on June 5th. He tested positive for heartworms, and if a rescue did not take him, he would be put to sleep July 6th. Ticker, a three-year-old Pit Bull mix, is a large, handsome and gentle white dog whose only marking is a band of black circling the base of his tail. He is cute and lovable, but unfortunately just one more heartworm positive Pitty mix among thousands that shelter staff are unable to save every year.
Mary Lou Seymour of The Heart Beat Goes On program began networking Ticker June 16th. To Mary Lou, calling, posting, e-mailing and texting are like hanging the Christmas stockings up: If you don’t put it on display, don’t expect to get anything. On July 6th, the day Ticker was scheduled to be euthanized, the shelter granted Ticker a reprieve until noon July 7th. With only hours to spare, DASH Animal Rescue in Ohio expressed interest in Ticker but needed funds to treat the heartworms. It was Christmas in July when we agreed to Mary Lou’s emergency request for assistance. Ticker was safe on July 8th, and had his heartworm treatment on July 16th.
December Clark, who’s Mary Lou’s partner with The Heart Beat Goes On program, tells us that Ticker is house-trained, friendly with humans and dogs alike, and is calm and loving. When Ticker sits at your feet, he has to have a paw on your leg! Ticker has received the gift of life, and he’s not letting go of it! To view more photos of Ticker, click here.
RADAR paid all of Ticker’s heartworm treatment costs, which totaled $315.
