Toby (known as Rusty at the shelter) will gladly take needed medication, as long as it is hidden in Colby (cheese)! This three-year-old Staffordshire Terrier mix arrived at the City of Emporia Virginia Shelter in Greensville County, Virginia as a stray on January 10th. Regretfully, he tested heartworm positive. His heartworm status discouraged adopters or rescues from taking him and so he sat in the shelter for four long months.
On May 10th, Toby’s luck changed for the better. Destiny Shell, founder of Dogs of Destiny in Virginia, contacted RADAR about Toby. Would we help with Toby’s heartworm treatment costs? If so, the rescue would pull him. We agreed, and Toby received his first heartworm treatment on June 17th.
The rescue has this to say about Toby: “He is an absolute dream! He settled in very quickly once he realized he was safe and loved. He does a whole body wiggle when he first sees you and never starts on his way when he is let out of his kennel until he gives you some snuggles first. He loves to lay his head on your chest and just hang out with you. He is super gentle when taking treats and he tilts his chin down and looks up at you while waiting for you to give him his treats. The closer you come to giving it to him, the faster his tail starts to wag! Toby has a cute bursting playful side when out and about. He does very well on a leash and loves meeting new people, although he is a little shy at first and likes to sniff things out to decide if you can be his friend. He has done very well with other dogs, even when they haven’t approached him all that nicely. It is easy to see why he is a large dog: he has to be to contain all his sweetness!” Click here to view more photos of Toby.
RADAR paid all of the costs for the first heartworm treatment for Toby, which totaled $320.
