When animal control found Treasure tied and abandoned under her owner’s house, it gave a whole new meaning to the term “Treasure trove.” It was on December 15th that this two-year-old Bully Breed mix was rescued by animal control and taken to the Aiken County Animal Shelter in South Carolina. While animal control had problems getting the emaciated and very anxious Treasure out from under the house because of her fear aggression, once she got to the shelter and received some TLC from a vet tech, she was fine. However, Treasure refused to eat in the shelter. But when they took her outside, she would settle down nicely and eat!

Because of her abandonment, Treasure had to be held at the shelter as “evidence” for the court case against her owner. When Treasure was released by the court on February 12th, she faced another, and more immediate life-threatening obstacle: she was heartworm positive. This meant that she could not be adopted. Her only way out of the shelter alive required a rescue.

Mary Lou Seymour of The Heart Beat Goes On program was determined to save Treasure. On February 15th, Mary Lou asked RADAR for help with Treasure’s heartworm treatment as an incentive for a rescue to take her. We agreed. After contacting over 70 Bully Breed rescues and not getting any commitment, and Treasure’s time up, on February 26th Mary Lou pulled her under The Heart Beat Goes On parent organization, the Palmetto Animal Welfare Services (PAWS) in South Carolina.

Treasure had her heartworm treatment done on March 3rd. “By the time we pulled Treasure,” Mary Lou said, “she was friendly but untrained. While she pulls very vigorously on her leash, there is not an aggressive bone in her body!” Click here to see more photos of Treasure.

RADAR paid $250 towards Treasure’s heartworm treatment costs.
