It used to be that there is no county animal shelter in Jackson County, Indiana. When a stray dog was reported to the sheriff’s department, a deputy was dispatched to simply shoot the dog. Fortunately, in 2009 the sheriff’s department realized that the situation was untenable. An agreement was reached with Ruth Riley’s Red Sky Rescue in Jackson County to have stray dogs taken to the rescue’s shelter facility rather than be shot. Fast-forward to April 12th, 2016, when Valerie, a two-year-old English Coonhound, was brought to Red Sky Rescue by animal control.

While Valerie’s life was not in jeopardy, when she tested heartworm positive, it meant that she had very limited options. Local adoptions are almost non-existent. Ruth told us that Red Sky relies heavily on Cathi Eagen with the Canine Express Transport Project to get their dogs to other rescue partners. But the dogs need to be healthy, so Valerie’s heartworms kept her from being a viable candidate. Ruth reached out to RADAR and asked if we could help with Valerie. We agreed to assist with her heartworm treatment, which took place on October 17th. Cathi not only helped facilitate Valerie’s treatment, but paid the portion of the cost not covered by RADAR.

“Valerie is a perfect dog!” Ruth shared with us. “She is friendly, social, gentle, polite, and eager to meet new friends! She adores children, and gets along great with other dogs. Valerie quickly earned the privilege of running free with the pack at our fenced shelter facility. She has been an angel!” Click here to view more photos of Valerie.

RADAR paid $250 towards Valerie’s heartworm treatment costs.
