Sadly, this story of Winifred does not have a happy ending. Two years old and a beautiful Bully Breed mix, Winifred arrived as a stray at the Aiken County Animal Shelter in South Carolina on October 17th. Like so many dogs at this rural shelter, Winifred tested heartworm positive. That meant that her only hope of getting out of the shelter would require a rescue commitment.
Mary Lou Seymour of The Heart Beat Goes On program began getting the word out to rescues about Winifred on October 23rd. With no rescue interest and Winifred’s time running out, Mary Lou turned to RADAR on November 2nd. If we would help with her heartworm treatment costs, Shelter Animals Advocates, the parent organization of The Heart Beat Goes On, would take Winifred. We agreed at once.
Winifred received her heartworm treatment on November 9th. She was returned to Sandy Crest Kennel on November 11th to recuperate. The next morning, Saturday, November 12th, she seemed fine other than being slightly lethargic, which is typical following heartworm treatment. The kennel staff went on to clean other kennels. A short time later, they came back to Winifred’s kennel and found her dead. She was given a proper burial in the Sandy Crest Kennel cemetery.
December Clark, Mary Lou’s partner with The Heart Beat Goes On had told us this about Winifred: “She was very sweet. She was friendly, relaxed and easy-going. What a wonderful and beautiful dog.” Click here to view more photos of Winifred.
RADAR paid all of Winifred’s heartworm treatment costs, which totaled $375.
UPDATE Although Winifred’s heartworm treatment seemed to go well, a few days later she unexpectedly passed away, crossing the Rainbow Bridge on November 12th, 2016. Mary Lou Seymour and December Clark, who run Shelter Animals Advocates and The Heart Beat Goes On program, and work tirelessly to save the heartworm-positive dogs of Aiken County, were devastated by the sudden loss of Winifred. Rest in peace, Winifred.
UPDATE All the funding for Winifred has been provided.
