Winnie wants to win you over! On October 24th this two-year-old, brindled Pit Bull mix arrived at the Chester County Animal Care & Control shelter in South Carolina. Winnie was surrendered by her owners. She was underweight and heartworm positive. Gaining weight was the easy part, but getting adopted or rescued with her heartworm status was problematic. Being a Pit Bull mix only made her situation all the more challenging.
On November 5th, the shelter contacted RADAR to see if we could assist with Winnie’s heartworm treatment. South of the Bully Rescue in North Carolina was interested in pulling Winnie if they could get help with her heartworm treatment costs. We agreed and South of the Bully committed to take Winnie the same day! Her heartworm treatment took place on December 17th and 18th.
“Winnie is a petite little princess!” Emily Ward told us. “I caught her dancing for me one day in her kennel when I walked by. I was trying to find another dog and caught her eye. She was so excited to see me. I’d only met her once before. She loves people and is learning that attention is good. I don’t think she had a lot before. I love her!” To view more photos of Winnie, click here.
RADAR paid all of Winnie’s heartworm treatment costs, which totaled $243.
UPDATE: All funds for Winnie have been raised. Thank you.
UPDATE We have learned that Winnie crossed the Rainbow Bridge on January 4th. Following her heartworm treatment, she began to periodically cough up blood. The vet ran tests, trying to determine the exact cause. Nothing was out of the norm for a dog who just underwent heartworm treatment. Winnie was also seen at an emergency vet – again, nothing alarming was found. Then on the morning of January 4th, Winnie began the day with a bad cough. Her body was just too ravaged from her previous neglect, and she passed away. Thank you to all who helped her get her second chance. Winnie had 2 months of love, food and a warm place to rest her head. Rest in peace.
