While this Winston is not a Churchill, he’s still much more than just a hound dog! A four to five-year-old Basset Hound-Bloodhound mix, Winston arrived as a stray at the Onslow County Animal Shelter in North Carolina on October 22nd. Winston was exhibiting symptoms of kennel cough, including both coughing and infected, weepy eyes. He urgently needed antibiotics to treat his infection. Winston, who was originally known as Bart at the shelter, also tested heartworm positive. He had to be rescued from the shelter ASAP if he was going to survive.
On November 10th, Ava Werstlein, an advocate for the dogs at the Onslow shelter, contacted Patti Power with The Rescue Express in Pennsylvania to see if her group would commit to take Winston. If so, Ava would pull Winston and immediately get him to the vet. As much as The Rescue Express wanted to take Winston, they could not cover all the costs of his heartworm treatment. Patti requested RADAR’s assistance on November 11th. We agreed, and Ava got Winston out of the shelter and to the vet. He was diagnosed and treated for pneumonia. Winston finally was well enough to began his heartworm treatment on December 18th. The final treatment took place on January 21st.
Ava shared this with us: “Winston is a big love! He came to us in such bad shape. At the shelter he was little more than a sack of bones who was barely interested in anything but laying down. Now he is a new dog! His coat is thick and shiny, and he has gained some much-needed weight. He is learning to trust again that a meal will always be in his future. Winston is always a big hit with anyone who meets him. He’s even found his voice when he’s excited! When he is listening intently, he will cock his head to the side. Winston is an absolute love bug!” To view more photos of Winston, click here.
RADAR paid $250 towards the heartworm treatment costs for Winston.
