Xena, the Warrior Princess, was on a quest to seek redemption for her past sins by using her formidable fighting skills to help those who were unable to defend themselves. But this Xena needed someone to defend her, with her life on the line because of her alleged past sins. Estimated to be eight to ten years old, Xena is a Siberian Husky mix who arrived at the Mercer County Animal Shelter in West Virginia on August 30th. She was surrendered to the shelter by her owner for allegedly killing some chickens. Now she faced her own death sentence at this rural kill shelter where a dog can be euthanized at any time after ten days at the shelter.

On September 1st, Sherry Hutchison, RADAR’s liaison with the shelter, asked us to help Xena. We immediately provided an offer to assist with her vetting costs as an incentive for a rescue to take Xena. On September 10th, Pet Helpers, Inc. in West Virginia agreed to take Xena! She was safely out of the shelter on September 11th and went directly to the vet. While Xena tested heartworm negative, she was diagnosed with a serious upper respiratory illness. She was treated and fully recovered. Xena had a follow-up appointment and testing done on October 1st.

“Now that she is better, Xena is a happy, loving and sweet girl,” Raschell Zipp of Pet Helpers, Inc. told us. “She’s enjoying the good life in her foster home. She smiles when you pet her and her whole body wags. She also loves to sit with you and give you kisses!” Click here to view more photos of Xena.

RADAR paid all $234 of Xena’s initial vetting, blood tests and treatment.
