Sweeter than cotton candy, Zara is a total love bug! Two to three years old and a Bully Breed mix, Zara was picked up as a stray by animal control on October 31st. She was taken to the Darlington County Humane Society shelter in South Carolina. Even with her huge smile, there was no rescue interest in her, in large part because she tested heartworm positive.

On November 20th, Long Trail Canine Rescue in Vermont expressed interest in taking Zara, if they could get funding for her heartworm treatment. Susan Blakeney, RADAR’s liaison with the Darlington County Humane Society Rescue, turned to us for help, and we agreed! Zara hit a temporary roadblock when she went into heat. This delayed her getting spayed, and she was finally able to get her heartworm treatment on January 15th.

Zara’s South Carolina foster had this to share with us: “This girl has a permanent grin on her face! Zara snorts when she gives kisses. She is polite, sweet and gentle. She acts like she has lived here before. She almost hopped right on the couch with my Beagle! She sniffed noses with my two of my cats and just kept walking. She is an absolute love!” Click here to view more photos of Zara.

RADAR paid all of Zara’s heartworm treatment costs, which totaled $255.
